Name: Liam &
Maria Payne
Company Name: OLIO & FARINA,
Galway.
Location: 50,Upper Abbeygate Street,
Galway.
Length of time in operation: 13 months.
Professional background before becoming a franchisee:
We owned our own Irish pub and restaurant for 10 years and previously
both of us managed similar businesses successfully for other people.
Why did you become involved in franchising: We wanted a change in direction having been in the bar and restaurant trade for over 25 years.
Why did you choose this franchise business: We both have a passion for quality Italian food and wine and love
Italy so we were very drawn to O&F and the exceptional quality of their products convinced us.
How did you research the company before setting up: We
attended franchise shows, bought all the franchise magazines available
, searched the internet and eventually found the O&F web site. We
immediately visited the
Limerick shop having first made contact with O&F ITALIA. After visiting
Susan Mulvihill’s shop at 2, Little Catherine Street in
Limerick and spoke with her and purchased a variety of the products and the fine wines, we were hooked.
What difficulties did you face starting off: The
most difficult thing for us initially was that we were opting for an
extended format, the shop and café. We felt this concept was ideal for
us drawing on our past experience but at times it was difficult as we
were working from plans and drawings and had not seen an existing
O&F café and shop combination. We had seen the shop format only.
How did you overcome these difficulties: We worked very closely with the O&F people in
Italy and brought it all to fruition. The fitters for the layout came over from
Italy and that was crucial for us as we were buying into someone else concept.
What advice would you give to others who have just started franchising or are looking for a franchise business in
Ireland:
Research the company and the product thoroughly. Be sure its what you
are looking for. Visit as many existing business locations already in
operation and gain insight from this. Take the time to find the most
suitable location for your style of franchise business . In our case a
city centre location was important whereas a location in a business or
retail park may suit another type of business more effectively. When
you find a franchise business that appeals to and suits your needs, it
can be very satisfying. It can be easier going the franchise route as
the product sourcing is done for you and the back up and support from
the parent company can be invaluable.
